Some KCIBR teams and riders have chosen not to enter the United States. To ensure safety and clarity for all participants, we are adopting the following policy:
No Wrong-Way Riding
- All riders must travel southbound only, from Haines Junction to Haines.
- Riding northbound (against the relay flow) is strictly prohibited, as it is unsafe and violates our highway permits.
Withdrawal Process for Riders Not Entering the U.S.
- Riders who choose not to cross the border must withdraw from the race no later than Checkpoint 6.
- We strongly encourage riders to finish at Checkpoint 4 or 5.
- After Checkpoint 5, the highway becomes narrower, windier, and has reduced visibility, increasing the risk of collision or injury.
- Checkpoint 6 is the furthest safe withdrawal point, and no riders should continue past this point unless completing the full course into the U.S.
At your withdrawal checkpoint:
- Dip and return your SI timing stick.
- Inform the checkpoint volunteer that your team is withdrawing.
- Hand in your blue team time sheet, if possible.
Note: If you withdraw early (e.g. at Checkpoint 4, 5 or 6), leg times for any incomplete official legs for your specific team size will not be recorded in final results (see below).
After Withdrawal
- Do not ride northbound back along the Haines Highway.
- For your safety and the safety of others, get into your team vehicle and drive home.
- Be extremely cautious while re-entering the highway, as riders and support vehicles will still be moving southbound.
How Withdrawals Will Be Reflected in Results
- Teams that do not complete the full course will be marked as DNF (Did Not Finish).
- However, individual times will still be shown for riders who complete the official legs for their specific team size, based on the data in the timing stick.
- Example: A 4-person team that completes Legs 1–6 but not 7–8 will see individual times for Legs 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6, but be marked as DNF overall.
- Riders who do not complete their official legs will appear as DNF individually as well.
