Leg 5 (31.5 km / 19.6 miles)
Don’t be deceived by the profile of this leg. After an initial climb out of Checkpoint 5 and downhill ride, this leg begins a long slow rise along open terrain to the Haines Summit in the coastal ranges.
This ride can be a battle with strong crosswinds on the “flattest” part of the route.
Closer to the finish, the route winds through the gentle alpine hills, by the headwaters of the Tatshenshini River and up to Nadahini Mountain on the right.
The green shack on the right at the base of the mountain is about 1.6 km or 1 mile from the finish. It ends on a short downhill sprint just past Nadahini to the Haines Summit.
Leg 5 riders on 8-person teams, enter and dip their timing sticks at Checkpoint 5.
Solo riders may stop at checkpoint 5 if accessing Cadence Cycle’s Solo Support Station. Solo Riders please do not enter the timing chute.
There is parking before and after the checkpoint, and on the left side of the road. There are some limited sight-lines so please use caution when pulling off and back onto the road surface with your vehicle close to the checkpoint.
